JOB TITLE: Highway Design Project Manager
GENERAL SUMMARY: Perform a variety of tasks at the direction of the
Transportation Design Program Manager that are involved with managing
roadway design projects for public and private sector clients in Virginia
and Maryland. The diversity of responsibilities and actual tasks to be
done require a flexible mindset and cooperative team oriented attitude to
support the rapid growth of the firm.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, LICENSURE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
BSCE or equivalent degree required, MS a plus
Professional Engineers license in Virginia and / or Maryland required.
Approximately 6 to 12 years of applicable roadway design and project
management experience in Virginia or Maryland is required.
Microstation and GeoPak experience required. AutoCAD Civil 3D experience a
plus.
Thorough familiarity with AASHTO, VDOT and/or MSHA design standards,
practices and policies
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
This position will report to the Transportation Design Program Manager who
will assign tasks as appropriate.
Specific activities that will likely be performed at this position include:
· Generate the scope, schedule and budget parameters for roadway
design projects with fees of up to several million dollars.
· Manage the execution of projects within the scope, schedule and
budget parameters previously developed.
· Manage subordinate staff in the performance of the project.
· Report project performance to the Transportation Design Program
Director clearly on a weekly basis through the generation and maintenance
of project reporting documents.
· Identify and resolve issues related to the performance of the
project, including the generation of supplemental scope, schedule and
budget requests and the resolution of staffing issues.
· Develop and implement QA/ QC plans for projects
· Manage subconsultants performance
· Assist in the identification and preparation for proposals for
future work.
· Effect Project Closeout
Additional responsibilities of this position include:
· Use Microstation and GeoPak software and occasionally AutoCAD
Civil 3D software to complete project assignments.
· Mentor, train and foster a team oriented atmosphere amongst
subordinates
· Direct complete teams of engineers and subconsultants in
completing projects
· Direct others in performing or in some cases self-perform designs
for all types of roadways based on AASHTO, VDOT, MSHA or local
municipalities design standards and criteria. Specific elements of design
may include
o Horizontal and vertical geometry
o Typical section development
o Pavement design
o Hydraulic design including culverts, inlets, storm sewer and
ditches
o Erosion and sediment control design
o Cross section development
o Water and sewer relocation design
o Stormwater management design
o Erosion and sediment control design
o Maintenance of Traffic and Sequencing of Construction Design
A variety of tasks will be performed at this level. These tasks include
but are not limited to the following items in which the person will be
leading or occasionally self performing:
· Preparation of construction documents and specifications
· Preparation of reports
· Field visits during design or construction
· Preparation for and attendance and participation in public meetings
· Reviewing and approving designs prepared by others
· Maintain organized files for both hard copy and electronic files
· Negotiating scope, schedule and fee with clients.
OTHER JOB DUTIES:
· Identify and report training needs for self and subordinates
including Cadd training, other technical training and beneficial industry
certifications
· Participate in professional society or associations activities,
potentially in a leadership position.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
95% of time will be in the office

Up to several person design team.
